'Lucky' MESSENGER data upends long-held idea about Venus' atmosphere

Philosopher Nicholas Rescher once wrote, "Scientific discoveries are often made not on the basis of some well-contrived plan of investigation, but through some stroke of sheer luck."

For a team of researchers at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, that statement couldn't be more true.

What started as a dry run to ensure instruments on NASA's Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft worked properly later turned into a 10-year saga that resulted in a chance discovery unrelated to the mission's target planet, Mercury. It's about Venus and its atmosphere.

The team reports April 20 in Nature Astronomy that data fortuitously collected by MESSENGER reveals a sudden rise in nitrogen concentrations at about 30 miles above Venus' surface, demonstrating the planet's atmosphere isn't uniformly mixed, as expected. That finding upends an understanding about Venus' atmosphere that has prevailed for decades.

The story started in June 2007 as MESSENGER sailed above Venus for its second flyby before veering toward Mercury. Mission instrument teams took the opportunity to test their devices and collect data before the real show was set to begin some six months later.

Among the team members was David Lawrence, a nuclear physicist at APL. He was the instrument scientist for MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer, which detects neutrons set loose into space from cosmic rays colliding with molecules in a planet's atmosphere or surface. It aimed to find the telltale signs of neutrons coming from hydrogen atoms in water molecules that were suspected (and later confirmed) to be frozen in the crater shadows at Mercury's poles.

Over Venus, however, Lawrence just wanted to collect some data to verify the instrument was operating correctly. An initial check showed it worked, and the data was tabled.

But in 2010, Lawrence revisited those measurements, this time with Patrick Peplowski, another nuclear physicist at APL. Despite 50 years of sending robotic missions to Venus, including 13 atmospheric probes or landers, a lot of uncertainty about the nitrogen concentration in Venus' atmosphere, especially between 30 and 60 miles above the surface, remained.


That puzzled Peplowski and Lawrence because nitrogen is the second most abundant molecule floating in Venus' atmosphere, after carbon dioxide.

"The uncertainty wasn't necessarily just in the MESSENGER instrument—it could be in the entire planet," Lawrence said.

Lawrence knew of a 1962 paper, however, that suggested neutron spectroscopy could help determine Venus' atmospheric nitrogen concentration. Nitrogen is fairly good at scavenging loose neutrons, unlike carbon and oxygen, which are some of the worst. So on Venus, the number of neutrons an instrument detects should depend on the amount of atmospheric nitrogen.

MESSENGER just happened to collect that information.

The pair ran a computer simulation that divvied the planet's 60-mile-thick atmosphere into bands in which they could manipulate the nitrogen concentration and realistically model how many neutrons would come streaming out to the spacecraft above.

When they compared their models with the MESSENGER data, they found the best match was when atmospheric nitrogen made up 5% of the volume, about 1.5 times that measured lower in the atmosphere. And all of the neutrons came from a region between roughly 35 and 60 miles above the surface—exactly where there had been the greatest uncertainty.

"That was very much a stroke of luck," Peplowski said.

Why nitrogen increases at higher altitude remains unknown. Their discovery raised more than a few eyebrows, Peplowski said, but not because people were blown away.

"Many scientists seemed surprised that this was even something worth investigating," Peplowski said. "The notion that there's a higher nitrogen concentration in the upper atmosphere than in the lower was outside people's range of thought."

They ran into that impasse before when trying to get funding to complete the study. The project was denied money three times because it was considered a dead end. The data they needed to feel confident in their results and push their study over the finish line came by good fortune through Jack Wilson, an APL scientist who just happened to be analyzing the same MESSENGER data for an unrelated project.

After the team presented preliminary results during a conference in 2016, the Russian Federal Space Agency cited their work in its Venera-D mission to study Venus' atmosphere and surface. Currently, two mission proposals under consideration for NASA's Discovery Program—DAVINCI+ and VERITAS, both of which include APL scientists on their teams—also aim to study Venus' atmosphere in greater detail.

Peplowski and Lawrence say this new result underscores the caution researchers need when drawing conclusions about atmospheric data, especially with the growing interest in planetary atmospheres in other solar systems.

"We're still learning fundamental things about Venus and its atmosphere, and it's our next-door neighbor," Peplowski said. "That scientists can speak with confidence about the atmospheres of exoplanets that are hundreds or thousands of light-years away is worth questioning."

Drawing rigorous and convincing conclusions requires a wide array of data.

But getting that data may sometimes require just a bit of good luck.

Solar wind speeds topped out at 390 KPS, which is sort of mild for a coronal stream, dropped to a low of 320 KPS, and has risen since 0200 to the 340-360 KPS range. The KP Index did rise into the "storm" range, with two KP-5 readings after yesterday's report. However, that then dropped to KP-2 and KP-1 readings, so the storm was short lived. No new significant coronal hole development, but the South pole hole still dominates. Oddly enough, there was a brief bright spot that is developing in that hole system, and we're seeing hints of another bright spot on the far side of the approaching lim in the low Southern latitudes. No new earthquakes of note this morning, outside a smattering of low-end blot echo activity.

Solar wind speeds continued dropping to a low of around 280 KPS by midnight, but a rise in particle density from a coronal hole stream knocked up the speed sharply to the 360-380 KPS range. The low KP-Index reading from all day yesterday jumped into the KP-2 to KP-3 range after midnight, with a KP-4 (minor solar storm) popping in at last report. It might pop into the "red" zone later today, but should calm back down soon after that. No new coronal holes developing outside the polar regions, and no new bright spots on the solar surface. Two temblors of note, a Mag 5.1 just over 100 miles SSE of the Philippines, and a rather sharp Mag 6.4 about 20 miles off the coast of Ofunato, Japan, which was deeper than most quakes (about 25 miles) but still outside of blot echo range.

US Builds Up Naval Forces In Caribbean In Pressure Campaign Against Maduro

US Southern Command chief Admiral Craig Faller said in an interview that the growing US buildup in the Caribbean does not represent a change in Venezuelan policy, and is not aimed at removing President Maduro from power.

Faller said that the US continues to want to oust Maduro through “economic and diplomatic pressure,” and not military force, though other officials have said the US would not rule out the use of military force to do so.

As the AP writes:

"This is not a shift in U.S. government policy," said Faller, who nonetheless celebrated that enhanced interdiction efforts would hurt Maduro's finances and staying power. "It's not an indication of some sort of new militarization in the Caribbean."

The deployment announced this month is one of the largest U.S. military operations in the region since the 1989 invasion of Panama to remove Gen. Manuel Noriega from power and bring him to the U.S. to face drug charges. It involves assets like Navy warships, AWACS surveillance aircraft and on-ground special forces seldom seen before in the region.

When the US started this latest buildup in the Caribbean, it was done nominally to fight drugs, and came immediately after the US put a bounty on Maduro accusing him of drug smuggling. Attorney General Barr created the legal basis for this.

This was why there was substantial concern about a US military invasion, as Barr had similarly constructed the pretext to invade Panama in 1989 and remove Manuel Noriega.

It was conceivable, after failing to oust Maduro other ways, that they might revisit the old tactic.

A few relatively small coronal holes passed the midpoint along the equator, but the primary coronal hole remains at the South pole. No bright spots on the surface. A surprisingly quiet lithosphere yesterday, with only a Mag 5.0 about 80 miles SSE of New Zealand, and a blot echo aftershock of Mag 57 near the same location and depth from yesterday's temblor off Chichi-shima, Japan .

QBZ-191 chambers a 5.8 × 42 mm round, which will replace the QBZ-95 assault rifle in service with the People's Liberation Army (PLA). CCTV says the new lightweight assault rifle was developed by the No. 208 Research Institute of China Ordnance Industries.

"According to sources, the new rifle is chambered in the standard 5.8x42mm caliber using a new type of rounds that have better performance on medium to long-range. It has an effective firing range of 300 m for the carbine version and 400 m for the assault rifle version with a rate of fire of 750 rpm (Rounds Per Minute)," Defense Blog said.

QBZ-191's design is very similar to modern bullpup-style rifles designed in Europe and the US with a top Picatinny rail for attachments. The weapon is outfitted with a new optical device, presumably a red dot sight.

The PLA has been on the hunt for several years to replace its legacy QBZ-95 assault rifle. It wasn't until the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in 2019, that a military parade via the PLA revealed the new weapon.

No new bright spots on the surface, nor any telltale glow coming from the Eastern lim. Also, no real coronal hole activity beyond the normal polar holes. Earthquake activity was a bit lower than yesterday, with a Mag 5.0 along the Reykjanes Ridge, a Mag 5.7 along the Mid-Indian Ridge, and a rather sharp Mag 6.9 blot echo about 90 miles west of Chichi-shima, Japan at a depth of 300 miles.

Astronomers spot the brightest supernova ever discovered

Scientists have discovered the brightest ever supernova.
The supernova, dubbed SN2016aps, is the brightest, most energetic and likely most massive supernova that has ever taken place, according to the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Mass.
A paper on the research has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
“SN2016aps is spectacular in several ways,” said Edo Berger, Harvard University professor and co-author on the paper, in a statement. “Not only is it brighter than any other supernova we’ve ever seen, but it has several properties and features that make it rare in comparison to other explosions of stars in the universe.”
A supernova, or the explosion of a star, is the largest explosion that takes place in space, according to NASA.
SN2016aps outshone normal supernova explosions by 500 times, the researchers said. “The intense energy output of this supernova pointed to an incredibly massive star progenitor,” explained Berger in the statement. “At birth, this star was at least 100 times the mass of our Sun.”
The supernova was first spotted in 2016 by scientists from CfA, the UK’s University of Birmingham, Northwestern University and Ohio University, using information from the Panoramic Survey Telescopes and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS).
“We determined that in the final years before it exploded, the star shed a massive shell of gas as it violently pulsated,” said Matt Nicholl, lecturer in gravitational wave astronomy at the University of Birmingham and study lead author, in the statement. “The collision of the explosion debris with this massive shell led to the incredible brightness of the supernova. It essentially added fuel to the fire.”
Scientists were also surprised by the high levels of hydrogen gas in SN2016aps.
“That SN2016aps held onto its hydrogen prompted us to theorize that two less massive stars had merged together since lower mass stars hold onto their hydrogen for longer,” said Berger. “The new star, borne of the merger, was heavy with hydrogen and also high enough in mass to trigger pair-instability.”

WASHINGTON — The first candidate in the running to replace the U.S. Army’s RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aircraft system had its first soldier-operated flight in an April 7 capabilities assessment.
The 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division flew the Arcturus UAV JUMP 20 at Fort Riley, Kansas.
It was uncertain whether the assessment would stay on schedule, according to an April 9 Army statement announcing the flight, due to precautions set out to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, COVID-19. But the 1st ID’s commanding general, Maj. Gen. John Kolasheski, determined it could proceed with “proper mitigations” while following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Defense Department to combat the spread of the virus.
The Army selected four unmanned aircraft systems in 2019 as candidates to replace the Shadow. The soldier assessments will also inform requirements for a future tactical unmanned aircraft system, or FTUAS, that would fit into a future vertical lift ecosystem to include new helicopters and other new, air-launched effects.

The service first selected two teams to provide systems for a competitive soldier-led evaluation in March 2019: Martin UAV and Textron’s AAI Corporation. Martin UAV has teamed with Northrop Grumman to provide its V-Bat UAS. Textron is offering its Aerosonde HQ.
But shortly after, the Army added two more aircraft to the mix: the Arcturus system and L-3 Harris’ FVR-90.
All the UAS went through a rigorous fly-off during December 2018 and January 2019 at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. The competition helped the service select the systems that would proceed to the soldier-assessment phase.

The Army was looking for systems that improved upon the Shadow UAS’ performance, particularly better acoustics (Shadow sounds like a flying lawn mower) and runway independence (Shadow relies on a runway to take off and an arresting device to land).
There are five units that will assess the systems, while the fifth unit will have a second set of the Arcturus system. The reason for a second unit testing the Arcturus aircraft is “simply a math problem,” an Army spokesperson told Defense News earlier this year. “With four vendors and five [brigade combat teams], a decision had to be made to purchase a fifth system to meet the fielding, training and assessment schedule," the spokesperson said.
The Arcturus UAV is the largest of the unmanned aircraft participating in the soldier assessments, weighing in at 210 pounds with an 18-foot wingspan.
“Despite the size, its reduced acoustic signature compared to the Shadow is appreciated by the entire crew,” the Army statement read.
"We're used to screaming at each other and having to use radios in order to communicate," Spc. Christopher McCoy, a crew chief assigned to 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st ABCT, said in the statement. "You can stand right next to this aircraft and not even raise your voice.”
The JUMP 20 can also “launch and recover from a confined area with minimal ground support equipment,” according to Spc. Nicholas Miller, a UAS operator also assigned to 1st Engineer Battalion.
The soldiers in the unit will work with the UAS over the next five months. “The assessment utilizes a crawl, walk, run mentality, progressing through operator and collective training, then culminating in brigade level field training exercises and a Combat Training Center rotation,” the statement noted.
Units at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Bliss, Texas; and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will evaluate the other UAS offerings from May through September, but the assessment schedules are “under regular re-evaluation as COVID-19 conditions change,” according to the statement.
The assessments of the four systems over the course of fiscal 2020 will help the Army decide how it would like to proceed in not only replacing the Shadow but also in acquiring an FTUAS system that will play an integral role in the future fleet alongside manned and optionally manned helicopters in advanced teaming.
“We are very focused on 2021 and seeing the outcomes,” Brig. Gen. Wally Rugen, who is in charge of the Army’s future vertical lift modernization efforts, said in 2019, “but our goal is that in 2021 that this could fully inform our requirement. And if things go tremendously, which they don’t always do, we are postured to exploit that success in 2021.”

Olive oil leads to discovery of new universal law of phase transitions

A simple drop of olive oil in a system of photons bouncing between two mirrors has revealed universal aspects of phase transitions in physics. Researchers at AMOLF used an oil-filled optical cavity in which light undergoes phase transitions similar to those in boiling water. The system they studied has memory because the oil causes photons to interact with themselves. By varying the distance between the two mirrors and measuring the transmission of light through the cavity, they discovered a universal law describing phase transitions in systems with memory. These results are published on April 15th in Physical Review Letters.

The Interacting Photons research group at AMOLF studies nonlinearity and noise in photonic systems. One of such systems is a cavity, formed by two mirrors facing each other at a close distance. Within the cavity, light bounces back and forth as it is reflected by the mirrors. Putting something inside such an optical cavity, changes the properties of the system. "We created a system with memory by placing a drop of olive oil inside the cavity," says group leader Said Rodriguez. "The oil mediates effective photon-photon interactions, which we can see by measuring the transmission of laser light through this cavity."

Scanning speed

Rodriguez and his Ph.D. students Zou Geng and Kevin Peters analyzed the transmission while increasing and decreasing the distance between the two mirrors at different speeds. They found that the amount of light transmitted through the cavity depends on the direction of movement of the mirrors. "The transmission of light through the cavity is non-linear. At a certain distance between the mirrors, the amount of transmitted light depends on whether we are opening the cavity or closing it," Rodriguez explains. "This behavior is called hysteresis. It is also observed in certain phase transitions, like in boiling water or magnetic materials."

Universal

However, in the cavity with olive oil, hysteresis is not always present, the researchers observed when they increased the speed at which the cavity opens and closes. Rodriguez: "In faster scans, we saw the hysteresis vanish as a function of the scanning speed. This happens at a universal rate, independent of parameters like light intensity or the strength of the non-linearity. The equations that describe how light behaves in our oil-filled cavity are similar to those describing collections of atoms, superconductors and even high energy physics. Therefore, the universal behavior we discovered is likely to be observed in such systems as well."

Coupling cavities

While it would be interesting to investigate the universal scaling behavior in other systems with memory, Rodriguez will keep his focus on oil-filled cavities. "Our system has a strong optical non-linearity at room temperature, which offers opportunities for potential applications," he says. "We are currently investigating what happens when we couple two or more cavities. Because each system has memory, an array of cavities might eventually be useful as a computational tool, or maybe even in sensing applications."

Solar wind speeds really took a dip from yesterday's high near 460 KPS, dropping below 300 KPS just after midnight, currently in the 320-340 KPS range. This was despite a rise in particle density and Phi Angle instability. The KP Index remained calm, mostly KP-1s, with a KP-2 in mid-evening and a KP-0 just before midnight. The South polar coronal hole crept up toward the mid-latitudes as it crossed the midpoint, but there are no equatorial holes, nor any major bright spots on the solar face. Several temblors of note since yesterday's report - a Mag 5.9 off Burma, a Mag 5.0 off the coast of Chile, another Mag 5.0 off the Solomon Islands, a Mag 5.3 off Japan, and a Mag 5.5 off Chirkof Island, Alaska.

The brutal proxy war in Syria, which has had the deep involvement of American intelligence and the Pentagon, has been wrapping up after grinding on for nine years. With the coronavirus pandemic now completely taking over the news cycle, and as Washington struggles to contain both the virus and devastating economic fallout, Syria has taken a far back seat in Western media despite the continued presence of American forces on the ground.

It seems Damascus is ready to take advantage of the situation, rolling back US influence and presence in the country. Syrian media as well as local sources say a large group of US-backed and trained fighters from al-Tanf camp, where American special forces have maintained a presence for years, have defected to the Syrian Army.

"Several U.S.-backed rebel fighters willingly surrendered themselves to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) forces in the Homs Governorate this week," Beirut-based Syrian war monitor al-Masdar News reports, citing local sources. "Members of the U.S.-backed rebel forces in the Tanf region of southeastern Homs agreed to surrender their weapons and equipment to the Syrian Arab Army after lengthy negotiations."

Pro-government media described it as "a major blow to the United States" in the region. Video circulated on social media purporting to show a convoy of vehicles leaving the al-Tanf region to join the pro-government side. 

The video was reportedly taken by a reporter with the pro-government broadcaster "Sham FM" and purports to show the defectors entering Tadmour from al-Tanf in southeast Homs province:

An 8-vehicle convoy reportedly departed the area with US military presence and drove to a Syrian Army post across the desert, where militants handed over their equipment and weapons.

The conditions of the agreement have not been made known, but negotiations had reportedly been ongoing for some time. More broadly, Damascus has pursued a 'reconciliation' program - offering select 'rebel' militant groups amnesty opportunities if they switch back to pro-government forces.

For years the Pentagon has been training and equipping the Kurdish and Arab 'Syrian Democratic Forces' (or SDF) — however, the Kurdish-dominated group in Syria's northeast has lately felt betrayed by Washington last year essentially giving Turkey's Erdogan a green light to invade northern Syria.

In particular, America's control of al-Tanf and its border crossing into Iraq has also been consistently condemned by Russia. The US has long maintained its presence is needed to fight ISIS, but Russia has called it an imperialistic land grab of sovereign Syrian soil in order to ultimately pressure Assad.

Method to synthesize high-quality copper oxide crystals for quantum photonics

Copper oxidation generally means tarnished surfaces and corroded electronics. But the compound Cu2O, or cuprous oxide, is a promising material for quantum photonics, optoelectronics and renewable energy technologies. Now, a team of researchers has found a way to synthesize high-quality copper oxide microcrystals.

Researchers from KTH Royal Institute of Technology report that they have developed a scalable production method for cuprous oxide (Cu2O) micrometer-sized crystals. Also involved in the study were the Institute of Solid State Physics, Graz University of Technology, Austria, and Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquée Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France.

"The unique properties of Cu2O can lead to new schemes for quantum information processing with light in the solid state, which are difficult to realize with other materials," says Stephan Steinhauer, researcher in KTH's Quantum Nano Photonics group.

"This work paves the way for the widespread use of Cu2O in optoelectronics and for the development of novel device technologies."

In order to synthesize the crystals, a copper thin film is heated to high temperatures in vacuum conditions. In their study, which was published in Communications Materials, the researchers at KTH took this method and identified the growth parameters to achieve Cu2O microcrystals with excellent optical material quality.

The process is compatible with standard silicon fabrication techniques and allows the possibility for photonic circuit integration.

"The majority of quantum optics experiments with this material have been performed with geological samples found in mines—for instance, the Tsumeb mine in Namibia," Steinhauer says. "Our synthesis method is associated with very low cost fabrication, suitable for mass production and does not require gases or chemicals that are toxic or harmful for the environment."

He says the work lays the foundation for realizing quantum technologies based on solid-state Rydberg excitations, which are excited quantum states with high principal quantum number.

These excitations can be interfaced with photonic integrated circuits, aiming at on-chip generation and manipulation of light at the single-photon level, he says. "Exciting challenges lie ahead to translate quantum information processing and quantum sensing schemes previously developed for Rydberg atoms into the solid-state environment of a semiconductor crystal at the micrometer or nanometer scale."

Solar winds ramped up in the late evening to nearly 460 KPS, but we're now back in the calmer 380-400 KPS range. The KP Index has also calmed down into the KP-2 to KP-1 range. I was rather shocked to see the new ENLIL Spiral | Magnetic Sector Boundaries and CME Events gif on the page, as it showed almost simultaneous ejections from two sides of the sun 180° apart. The Earth-facing one will give at most a glancing blow of particles, but it's still amazing to watch. 

The lithosphere was much busier yesterday, with seven temblors of note -- a Mag 5.4 in Columbia, a Mag 5.1 off Costa Rica, a Mag 5.1 off Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy Russia, a Mag 5.3 off Papua New Guinea, a strong mag 6.3 in Honduras, a Mag 5.0 off the South Sandwich Islands, and a Mag 5.2 off Fiji.

We had more solar magnetic instability in the past 24 hours, which had the solar wind speeds jumping from a low of 375 KPS to a high of 450 KPS. The current range is 440-460 KPS. The KP Index was up and down like a merry-go-round as well, dropping from KP-3 to KP-0, and then jumping back up to KP-3. No new bright spots, and mid-latitude coronal hole development is lackluster to say the least. The lithosphere was a bit busier since yesterday's report, with a Mag 5.0 off the Philippines, a Mag 5.4 and 5.0 off the coast of Japan, a Mag 5.1 off the Southwest Mexican coast, and a significantly higher number of blot echo temblors.
