Australia has recently signed a massive contract with Elbit Systems, an Israeli military technology company, as part of its arms race against China.

Elbit will supply the Australian Army with key components for its 129 new Redback APCs. Each APC (armored personnel carrier), will be equipped with a turret with a 30 mm cannon, a spur arrow defense system equivalent to the  Iron Dome. It will also supply observation systems and a system that detects laser locks on the APC. These systems warn the crew that they have been targeted by an enemy missile.


The Australian tanks will also be equipped with a situational awareness system, providing the commander with an outside view of the tank through helmet display, similar to fighter pilots. Some of these systems are now integrated into the IDF's new Merkava M. 4 Barak battle tanks, and will also install a windshield system on the heavy-duty APCs and the D-9 bulldozers of the Israeli Combat Engineering Corps.


The Australian APC is actually the South Korean K21 heavy combat APC, equivalent to the Israeli Namer, which will be manufactured in Australia. In separate deals, two other Israeli defense industries will be integrated into the APC: Rafael will supply it with Spike missiles, and Plasan, global leader in vehicle protection, will supply part of the armor. According to estimates, each Australian APC will have Israeli systems worth more than $2.5 million.


The Australian procurement is part of a broader effort to upgrade its military capabilities in response to the growing Chinese influence. With American assistance, Australia will equip itself with nuclear submarines for the first time, acquire F-35 fighter jets, and more.

Bezalel Machlis, president and CEO of Elbit Systems, stated that "This milestone reaffirms our commitment to providing advanced and critical solutions to the Australian Army. Elbit Systems is committed to providing advanced defense technologies that will protect the soldiers on the battlefield."

The deal for Elbit comes after it was announced last week that the company had earned a new contract worth $300 million for supplying systems for armored vehicles to a country in Western Europe.


The contract includes weapon systems, tours, navigation, and situational awareness for approximately 230 armored vehicles. The contract will be executed over a period of 6 years and includes custom design, manufacturing, product lifecycle maintenance, and full in-country product support.


These are systems similar to those supplied by Elbit for the IDF's Merkava tanks and armored personnel carriers and the IDF that operate in the Gaza Strip and accumulate significant operational experience.

Although Elbit has not specified names, there are currently many countries with significant armored vehicle fleets, mainly Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Germany, most of which are equipped with the Swedish armed CV90 or the Finnish Patria wheeled APC.

Researchers have discovered how to make an optical metamaterial that would underpin a variety of new technologies.

A new approach has allowed researchers at Aalto University to create a kind of metamaterial that has so far been beyond the reach of existing technologies. Unlike natural materials, metamaterials and metasurfaces can be tailored to have specific electromagnetic properties, which means scientists can create materials with features desirable for industrial applications.

The Nonreciprocal Magnetoelectric Effect

The new metamaterial takes advantage of the nonreciprocal magnetoelectric (NME) effect. The NME effect implies a link between specific properties of the material (its magnetization and polarization) and the different field components of light or other electromagnetic waves. The NME effect is negligible in natural materials, but scientists have been trying to enhance it using metamaterials and metasurfaces because of the technological potential this would unlock.

“So far, the NME effect has not led to realistic industrial applications. Most of the proposed approaches would only work for microwaves and not visible light, and they also couldn’t be fabricated with available technology,” says Shadi Safaei Jazi, a doctoral researcher at Aalto. The team designed an optical NME metamaterial that can be created with existing technology, using conventional materials and nanofabrication techniques.

Revolutionizing Optical Applications

The new material opens up applications that would otherwise need a strong external magnetic field to work – for example, creating truly one-way glass. Glass that’s currently sold as ‘one-way’ is just semi-transparent, letting light through in both directions. When the brightness is different between the two sides (for example, inside and outside a window), it acts like one-way glass. But an NME-based one-way glass wouldn’t need a difference in brightness because light could only go through it in one direction.

“Just imagine having a window with that glass in your house, office, or car. Regardless of the brightness outside, people wouldn’t be able to see anything inside, while you would enjoy a perfect view from your window,” says Safaei. If technology succeeds, this one-way glass could also make solar cells more efficient by blocking the thermal emissions that existing cells radiate back toward the sun, which reduces the amount of energy they capture.

Lend a hand: New 'dressing robot' may mimic assistance provided by caregivers


This technology could be significant in the social-care system to allow caregivers to spend less time on practical tasks and more time on the health and mental well-being of individuals.  


The shortage of caregivers for the seriously disabled is a major problem in Israel and around the world. Robots have been suggested for helping them, but until now, only one-armed machines have been created as assistive-dressing robots in the lab, and research has shown that this can be uncomfortable or impractical for the person in care. 

The shortage of caregivers is a pressing challenge worldwide because of a decrease in birth rates combined with an increase in life expectancy. According to the World Health Organization, by 2030, one in six people in the world will be aged 60 years or over, and two decades later, those aged 60 years and older will double.

Scientists in the UK have developed a scheme that can mimic the two-handed movements of caregivers as they dress an individual. Prof. Jihong Zhu, a robotics researcher at the University of York’s Institute for Safe Autonomy, has designed a two-armed assistive dressing model that has not been attempted in previous research. He said that specific actions are required to reduce discomfort and distress to the individual in their care.

It is thought that this technology could be significant in the social-care system to allow caregivers to spend less time on practical tasks and more time on the health and mental well-being of individuals. 

Zhu gathered important information on how caregivers moved during a dressing exercise, allowing a robot to observe and learn from human movements and then, through artificial intelligence, generate a model that mimics how human helpers do their task. This allowed him and his team to gather enough data to illustrate that two hands were needed for dressing and not one, as well as information on the angles that the arms make and the need for a human to intervene and stop or alter certain movements.


The team members published their findings in the journal IEEE Transactions on Robotics under the title “Do You Need a Hand? – a Bimanual Robotic Dressing Assistance Scheme.” 

“We know that practical tasks, such as getting dressed, can be done by a robot, freeing up a care worker to concentrate more on providing companionship and observing the general well-being of the individual in their care,” said Zhu. “It has been tested in the lab, but for this to work outside of the lab we really needed to understand how caregivers did this task in real time.”

They used a method called learning from demonstration, which means that you don’t need an expert to program a robot; someone just needs to demonstrate the motion that is required of the robot, and it learns that action. It was clear that for caregivers’ two arms were needed to properly attend to the needs of individuals with different abilities.

They identified a key feature – the angle of the elbow that affects the dressing action – and proposed an optimal strategy for the interactive robot using the feature.

“One hand holds the individual’s hand to guide them comfortably through the arm of a shirt, for example, while at the same time, the other hand moves the garment up and around or over.  With the current one-armed machine model, a patient is required to do too much work for a robot to help them, moving their arm up in the air or bending it in ways that they might not be able to do.”

The team was also able to build algorithms that made the robotic arm flexible enough in its movements for it to perform the pulling and lifting actions but also be prevented from making an action by the gentle touch of a human hand or guided out of an action by a human hand moving the hand left or right, up or down, without the robot resisting.

Zhu said: “Human modeling can really help with efficient and safe human and robot interactions, but it important not only to ensure it performs the task, but that it can be halted or changed mid-action should that be needed. Trust is a significant part of this process, and the next step in this research is testing the robot’s safety limitations and whether it will be accepted by those who need it most.”

PARIS — Sweden’s Saab signed a contract with Poland to provide the country with more than $1 billion worth of Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifles, ammunition and training equipment.


Saab expects to book the order, with a value of 12.9 billion Swedish kroner ($1.2 billion), before the end of June, the company said in a statement on Monday. The contract period runs from 2024 to 2027.

The Carl-Gustaf M4, the fourth generation of a recoilless rifle dating back to the late 1940s, has been a commercial success for Saab, with at least 15 countries buying the system. The U.S. Army in September expanded a 2019 framework contract for the Carl-Gustaf, ordering new high-explosive rounds for the system in a $105 million deal that also included AT4 disposable anti-tank systems.

“I am proud of our close relationship with the Polish Armed Forces and that Saab can continue to strengthen Poland’s ground combat capability and national defense,” Saab CEO Micael Johansson said in the statement.


The order will include several thousand Carl-Gustaf launchers as well as hundreds of thousands of rounds of various types, the Polish Ministry of National Defence said in a statement. The Carl-Gustaf M4 weighs about 7 kilograms, and consist of a shoulder-launched reusable system firing a range of 84mm rounds, including anti-armor and anti-personnel ammunitions.


Poland, which had already been in the process of rearming, boosted its military budget further following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The country is spending on everything from tanks and frigates to anti-air defense and fighter jets, and is pursuing a goal to increase the size of its military by about 60% to create a 300,000-strong army.


The Polish contract is expected to be effective by the end of the second quarter, subject to fulfilment of “certain external conditions,” Saab said, without providing details.


Saab in October received a Japanese order for more than 300 Carl-Gustaf systems for delivery in 2025, followed by a purchase from an unidentified buyer in November worth 1.3 billion kroner that helped lift the company’s order book to a record at the end of 2023.


Separately, the company said it started construction on a new Carl-Gustaf factory in India on Monday, after receiving approval for a 100% foreign direct investment. The site will be the first for the system outside Sweden, and the first foreign fully-owned defense production facility in India, according to Saab.

The company will partner with Indian suppliers and will fully meet “Make in India” requirements for systems produced at the new site in the state of Haryana, Saab said, referring to the Indian government’s mantra of prioritizing domestic production. The Indian Army has been a customer for the Carl-Gustaf system since 1976, according to the Swedish company.
