The Indian military are about to acquire four Heron Mark-2 drones from Israel, which would allow them to keep a close eye on Chinese actions in the Ladakh region and other places along the Line of Actual Control with China.

The deal was reached in mid-January between New Delhi and IAI, however the arrival of the UAVs was delayed due to the continuing COVID-19 epidemic.

According to The Times of India, the first two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) would arrive in India within two to three months, with the remaining two arriving by the end of the year.

The $200 million contract was originally intended to be a three-year lease arrangement, but New Delhi chose to acquire the platforms as part of the country's ambitions to strengthen its military in the face of the continuous border dispute with China.

The Indian Air Force already operates more than 180 Israeli-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including 108 IAI-made Searchers and 68 unarmed Heron 1s for surveillance and intelligence gathering, as well as a fleet of IAI-produced Harpy UAVs, which carry a high-explosive warhead and self-destruct to take out targets such as radar stations.
