The US Marine corps has approved continuing the development of a mobile aerial defense system, based in part on the Israeli Iron Dome, by Rafael.

This announcement was made following a Corps’ Milestone Decision Authority meeting last month, and approved the Medium-Range Intercept Capabilities (MRIC) program.

This year, a decision will be made regarding the development of a prototype system, similar to Iron Dome, and designed to intercept rockets, artillery shells and mortars launched from a maximum range of 72 km.

The Marine Corps describes Iron Dome as a three-tier system, which includes a radar to track enemy ammunition, an advanced software that calculates the enemy’s missile trajectory, and the “Tamir” interceptor, which destroys the target.

The Israeli defense establishment has previously boasted a 90% interception success of rockets and missiles launched towards Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip.
