Pictures from aftermath of Dunkirk

The spoils of Dunkirk: Unseen photos taken soon after historic Allied retreat reveal just some of the thousands of vehicles and weapons abandoned to the Nazis

Described as a 'miracle of Deliverance' by the then Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the escape from Dunkirk was the largest military evacuation in history.

Codenamed Operation Dynamo, an estimated 338,000 Allied troops were rescued from northern France between May 27 and June 4, 1940, after German forces had swept through Europe.

But whilst it is rightly remembered as a heroic effort against all the odds, it was also a catastrophic early defeat which - had it not achieved its purpose - could have put an end to the Second World War less than a year after it had begun.

More than 11,000 British soldiers were killed, with a further 40,000 captured and another 17,000 wounded.

Now, rare images featured in a new book shed new light on the cost of the evacuation in material terms.

Overall, the British Expeditionary Force were forced to abandon approximately 64,000 vehicles, including tanks and motorbikes; around 90,000 rifles and 2,472 field guns or artillery pieces.

The Royal Air Force also saw 177 aircraft which were trying to support the evacuation get shot down, whilst the Royal Navy lost six destroyers and suffered damage to 23 others. 

Stephen Wynn's book Dunkirk and the Aftermath - Rare Photos from Wartime Archives, is published by Pen & Sword this month.

Another shows how Allied forces lined up vehicles and crates of equipment to produce makeshift piers which they used to get to waiting rescue ships.

A third shows dozens of motorbikes which have had their fuel tanks damaged and headlights smashed to render them useless to the invading German troops. 

The scenes are reminiscent of the US's disastrous evacuation from Afghanistan last month, which saw American forces leave behind thousands of vehicles, weapons and other equipment for the Taliban to use.

Evacuation of Dunkirk: How 338,000 Allied troops were saved in 'miracle of deliverance' after the German Blitzkreig saw Nazi forces sweep into France 

The evacuation from Dunkirk was one of the biggest operations of the Second World War and was one of the major factors in enabling the Allies to continue fighting.

It was the largest military evacuation in history, taking place between May 27 and June 4, 1940 after Nazi Blitzkreig - 'Lightning War' - saw German forces sweep through Europe.

The evacuation, known as Operation Dynamo, saw an estimated 338,000 Allied troops rescued from northern France. But 11,000 Britons were killed during the operation - and another 40,000 were captured and imprisoned.

Described as a 'miracle of deliverance' by wartime prime minister Winston Churchill, it is seen as one of several events in 1940 that determined the eventual outcome of the war.

The Second World War began after Germany invaded Poland in 1939, but for a number of months there was little further action on land.

But in early 1940, Germany invaded Denmark and Norway and then launched an offensive against Belgium and France in western Europe.

Hitler's troops advanced rapidly, taking Paris - which they never achieved in the First World War - and moved towards the Channel.

It was the largest military evacuation in history, taking place between May 27 and June 4, 1940. They reached the coast towards the end of May 1940, pinning back the Allied forces, including several hundred thousand troops of the British Expeditionary Force. Military leaders quickly realised there was no way they would be able to stay on mainland Europe.

Operational command fell to Bertram Ramsay, a retired vice-admiral who was recalled to service in 1939. From a room deep in the cliffs at Dover, Ramsay and his staff pieced together Operation Dynamo, a daring rescue mission by the Royal Navy to get troops off the beaches around Dunkirk and back to Britain.

On May 14, 1940 the call went out. The BBC made the announcement: 'The Admiralty have made an order requesting all owners of self-propelled pleasure craft between 30ft and 100ft in length to send all particulars to the Admiralty within 14 days from today if they have not already been offered or requisitioned.'

When they got to Dunkirk they faced chaos. Soldiers were hiding in sand dunes from aerial attack, much of the town of Dunkirk had been reduced to ruins by the bombardment and the German forces were closing in.

Above them, RAF Spitfire and Hurricane fighters were headed inland to attack the German fighter planes to head them off and protect the men on the beaches.

As the little ships arrived they were directed to different sectors. Many did not have radios, so the only methods of communication were by shouting to those on the beaches or by semaphore.

Space was so tight, with decks crammed full, that soldiers could only carry their rifles. A huge amount of equipment, including aircraft, tanks and heavy guns, had to be left behind.

The little ships were meant to bring soldiers to the larger ships, but some ended up ferrying people all the way back to England. The evacuation lasted for several days.

Prime Minister Churchill and his advisers had expected that it would be possible to rescue only 20,000 to 30,000 men, but by June 4 more than 300,000 had been saved.

But there were also heavy losses, with around 90,000 dead, wounded or taken prisoner. A number of ships were also lost, through enemy action, running aground and breaking down. Despite this, the evacuation itself was regarded as a success and a great boost for morale.

In a famous speech to the House of Commons, Churchill praised the 'miracle of Dunkirk' and resolved that Britain would fight on: 'We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!'

Astronomers Find Super-Fast Rotation of Baby Star’s Jet

It is known that gas jets are ejected from a baby star, but it was not clear how the jets are formed. By observing the rotation of the jets in detail and combining it with theoretical models, astronomers identified the driving mechanism and the role of the jets in star formation.

Using ALMA, the team led by Yuko Matsushita at NAOJ found that the jets from a protostar OMC 2/FIR 6B are rotating at very high speed. The velocity of rotation and angular momentum of the FIR 6B jets are the highest among all the jets detected so far. The rotational velocity and angular momentum are much larger than previously predicted and can only be explained by the magnetic drive model. The rotation of the jet can be realized by forcing the rotation of a disk at a radius of 3 au from the protostar to be transmitted to matter at a distance of 100 au by the force of a magnetic field.

This research has also clarified that jets appear due to the effect of magnetic fields. The jet also causes the gas in the disk to lose its angular momentum and fall to the center of the disk, helping the protostar to grow.

These super-fast rotating jets appear only during the short period when the young star growing. This study showed that jets play an essential role in the growth of stars.

New Realm of “Unnuclear Physics” – Neutrons May Actually “Talk” to One Another in New Kind of Symmetry

University of Chicago and German physicists propose new realm of ‘unnuclear physics.’

Even though neutrons love to partner with protons to make the nucleus of an atom, the particles have always been notorious for their reluctance to bind with each other. But according to a new proposed theory, these particles might communicate under certain circumstances, forming a new sort of ‘unparticle’—which could offer evidence of a new kind of symmetry in physics.

Dam Thanh Son, the University Professor of Physics at the University of Chicago, laid out the argument in a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which he co-authored with Hans-Werner Hammer of the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany.

The new study was inspired by an idea first proposed in 2007 by Harvard University professor Howard Georgi, who suggested that there could be a phenomenon beyond our traditional idea of matter.

“Everything surrounding us is made out of particles—a localized dot in space that can carry energy—but his idea was that in nature, maybe there could be something that carries energy, but is less crisp and more fuzzy,” said Son. “He playfully called this concept an ‘unparticle.’”

Son and Hammer wanted to try applying this concept to understand the behavior of particles in the nuclei of atoms—especially more exotic nuclei, which wink in and out existence during violent events in the universe, such as when stars explode. “We only know a fraction of these exotic nuclei,” said Son.

To study these exotic atomic nuclei on Earth, scientists smash heavy nuclei into each other in accelerators. What comes out is a new nucleus, and a shower of neutrons. Son and Hammer observed that as the neutrons stream out and away, a few that are going in the same direction may continue to “talk” to one another—even after the others have stopped interacting. This sustained communication between neutrons could constitute a fuzzy “unnucleus,” with its own properties distinct from normal nuclei.

To get a sense of this fuzziness, Son said, “It’s a bit like the difference between being hit by a stone, and being hit by a stream of water.” Both carry energy, but the form is different.

In their new study, Son and Hammer laid out how and where to look for evidence of these “unnuclei” in accelerators, and a general explanation for the field of what they playfully called “unnuclear physics.”

This could be a manifestation, the scientists said, of a type of symmetry called conformal symmetry. Symmetries are fundamental to modern physics; they are common features that remain even as a system changes—the most famous being that the speed of light is constant throughout the universe.

In conformal symmetry, a space distorted, but all angles are kept unchanged. For example, when one draws a 2D map of the entire 3D Earth, it is impossible to preserve all distances and angles at the same time. However, some maps, such as a common version first drawn by Gerardus Mercator, are drawn so that all angles remain correct, but at the cost of greatly distorting the distances near the poles.

“This conformal symmetry does not appear in the Standard Model of physics, but it does feature in Georgi’s ‘unparticle’ proposal, and it also appears here,” Son said. The proportion of energy carried by each particle in the “unnucleus” remains unchanged even as the distance between them changes.


“These results appear to have some universality.”

“It was a surprise to me, because unusually for nuclear physics, these results appear to have some universality,” said Son. That is, unlike the many calculations in physics that depend on the accuracy of even the tiniest details and numbers, “these numbers are not sensitive to detail at all,” he said.

Because the calculations are so robust even if some details are missing, Son said that if the argument is confirmed, physicists might be able to use these formulas to check other calculations.

He and Hammer also noted that this behavior may occur when atoms are cooled to super-low temperatures, and in exotic particles called tetraquarks, made up of two quarks and two antiquarks.

“It’s interesting to work on a problem that may have consequences in so many fields of physics,” Son said.

Solar wind speeds dropped precipitously around 1100 UTC on Saturday from a peak of 450 KPS to a low of 340 KPS, approaching 400 KPS again around midnight UTC before dropping and stabilizing along the 300 KPS line by 1600 UTC yesterday. It did bump up to 330 KPS around 0430 UTC today and steadied at 320 KPS. Temperatures followed the wind speed track, reducing from a high of 5400°K midday UTC Saturday to a current 4200°K-4400°K range at 1000 UTC today. Particle Density was mostly steady from Saturday midday UTC, although there was a noticeable increase starting around 1330 UTC yesterday for four hours before reducing and stabilizing again. This appears to have been driven by some Phi Angle instability, itself driven by a series of polarity collisions on the Bt/Bz chart, followed by a wide gap (and Phi Angle stabilization) before another collision around 0330 UTC which caused yet another shift. KP-Index readings stayed in the green, with just two increases to KP-3 but otherwise in the lower levels. The Magnetometer seems to finally be back in a stable, nominal sine wave pattern after last week's repeated dips to the threshold level. The Proton Flux chart is nominal, but the Electron Flux has shown one brief foray above the alert line for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon UTC before returning to safer levels. X-Ray Flux levels stayed in the mid-to-upper Class B flare range. I did see from the video loop at 193Ã… a strong pop around 1745-1800 UTC yesterday from the trailing edge of the Northern sunspot group (not quite at the midpoint). It displayed as a flare at 131Ã…, but didn't seem to expel X-Rays. The Southern coronal hole is now crossing the centerline. There's a lot of action at both lims of the disc visible at 304Ã…, as well as some sparking from the incoming sunspots in the South. The Magnetogram from SOHO is pretty messy, with three distinct sunspots in the South and a pair of more diffuse ones North of the equator. All of them at least Beta complexity, and the two stronger Southern ones are still approaching the strike range of Earth, but they're not as magnetically complex as the other Southern one. The Northern one is pretty diffuse. They're also all showing up on the Solar Visible Light loop as well.

Solar wind speeds were mostly steady yesterday, but around 0200 UTC they went up to the 420-450 KPS range. That uptick coincided with a downturn in Particle Density, but again, it was a pretty mild one. Temperatures remained mostly steady, but you can't say that about the Phi Angle. Scrambled like a failed omelet. Looks like it was caused by a lot of polarity clashes on the Bt/Bz chart, which was oscillating between wide gaps and rapid-fire collisions. KP Index readings did have a bump at noon yesterday to KP-3, but that appears to be anomalous as we're back to KP-1s and KP-2s.  The Magnetometer is showing some pretty jagged motions but they're within the nominal range. Proton Flux readings are nominal, and it looks like the Electron Flux chart might finally be renormalizing (well, hopefully).  The X-Ray Flux was pretty bumpy with a series of spikes and surges, but none of them crossed the Class C flare line. The video loops are showing an increase in the size of the coronal hole system at the North pole, and the hole in the higher Southern latitudes has also grown since yesterday. There are also more sunspots and bright areas incoming from the Eastern lim, mostly in the South mid-latitudes. You can see hints of one of them having already crossed on the Magnetogram. And the LASCO C3 is showing a bright jet coming out from the Southeast, possibly from behind the star, but it doesn't look like a classic CME.

Student-designed experiment to measure Earth's magnetic field arrives at Space Station

Oscar-Qube, short for Optical Sensors based on CARbon materials: QUantum Belgium, is an experiment developed by a group of students from the University of Hasselt, Belgium. Part of ESA Education Office's Orbit Your Thesis! program, the experiment arrived at the International Space Station on Space X Dragon CR23 resupply mission yesterday.

This week, ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet will install the experiment in the Ice Cubes Facility that offers commercial and educational access to the microgravity environment of the Space Station.

Oscar-Qube's mission is to create a detailed map of Earth's magnetic field. It makes use of a new type of magnetometer that exploits diamond-based quantum sensing, meaning that it is highly sensitive, offers measurements to the nano scale, and has a better than 100-nanosecond response time.

These features combine to create a powerful experiment that, once in position, will allow it to map the Earth's magnetic field to an unrivaled level of precision.

Oscar-Qube is designed and built exclusively by the first student team to test a diamond-based quantum technology sensing device in space. They will go on to manage operations during its 10-month stay onboard the International Space Station.

China wants to build a spaceship that's kilometers long

It's no secret that China has become a major contender in spaceflight. In the past 20 years, the China National Space Agency (CNSA) has accomplished some historic firsts. This includes sending astronauts to space, deploying three space stations (as part of the Tiangong program), developing heavy launch vehicles (like the Long March 5), and sending robotic explorers to the far side of the moon and Mars.

Looking ahead to the next decade and beyond, China is planning on taking even bolder steps to develop its space program. Among the many proposals the country's leaders are considering for its latest five-year plan, one involved creating an "ultra-large spacecraft spanning kilometers." Having this spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO) would be a game-changer for China, allowing for long-duration missions and the use of space resources.

This proposal comes at a time when China has been achieving multiple milestones in space. Earlier this year, China became the second nation in the world to successfully land a rover on the surface of Mars and the first to land a mission that consisted of an orbiter, lander and rover. Two years ago, China became the first nation to land a robotic mission on the far side of the moon (the Chang'e-4 lander and rover).

This ambitious proposal was one of ten submitted by The National Natural Science Foundation of China at a meeting in Beijing earlier this month. Each of these projects has been awarded $2.3 million (the equivalent of ¥15 million) in funding to further research and development. One of the project's main goals will reportedly be to find ways to keep the spacecraft's mass down while ensuring they are structurally sound enough to launch to orbit.

According to the project outline published by the Chinese foundation and cited by the South China Daily Mail (SCDM), the spacecraft elements will be built on Earth and then launched individually to orbit to be assembled in space. The same outline specifies that this spacecraft will be "a major strategic aerospace equipment for the future use of space resources, exploration of the mysteries of the universe and staying in long-term."

Given the specifications cited in the document, there is a great deal of skepticism about this proposal. For starters, it would take a ridiculous number of launches to deploy all of the necessary elements to space. For comparison, the International Space Station (ISS) is the largest artificial structure ever assembled in orbit. Yet, it took dozens of launches and many years to assemble and at considerable cost to all its participants.

The largest elements went up first, which included NASA's Destiny and Unity modules, the Soviet-Russian Zarya and Zvezda modules, as well as the Integrated Truss Structure (ITS) and solar arrays. It took 42 assembly flights to deliver these elements, 36 of which were performed using the space shuttle, while the remainder were conducted with the Russian Proton or Soyuz-U launchers.

Since assembly began in 1998, no less than 232 extravehicular activities (EVAs) were required to assemble and maintain them. All told, the ISS has cost a total of $150 billion to develop and build, with NASA and Roscosmos incurring the majority of these expenses. The station also requires $4 billion a year for operations and general upkeep, a burden that is shared today by 15 member nations and their respective space programs.

And yet, the ISS measures 109 meters (356 ft) from end to end, whereas the proposed Chinese platform calls for a structure at least 20 times that size. Based on the roughest of estimates, it would be safe to say that a spacecraft "spanning kilometers" would cost upwards of $3 trillion (or close to ¥20 trillion). However, as part of China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), the proposal appears to be aimed at merely studying the in-orbit assembly of an extra-large spacecraft.

Do we dare hope that the words "ultra-large spacecraft" are an allusion to a space elevator in this context? It's not the most far-fetched assumption, given that space elevators have come back into vogue in recent years. Thanks to the development of carbon nanotubes, graphene, diamond nanofilament, and other supermaterials, space agencies, and architectural firms worldwide have been investigating the concept with renewed interest.

During China's sixth annual "National Space Day," there were indications that the country is interested in pursuing a Starship-like spacecraft and spaceplanes. And more recently, China announced plans to conduct crewed missions to Mars by 2033 as part of a long-term plan to build a permanent base there, thus superseding NASA's plan to send astronauts there in the next decade).

Whatever the long-term goal is with this kilometer-spanning spacecraft proposal, it is clear that China is taking its newfound status as a major space player very seriously. It's also clear that they intend to expand on that in the coming years, to the point that they would replace NASA and Roscosmos to become the world's leading power in space.

Solar wind speeds appear to be reflecting the coronal hole stream from the other day, but mildly so. We peaked out at nearly 400 KPS around 0200 UTC and 0500 UTC, with the range backing down to 360-380 KPS as of 1000 UTC. Particle Density remained steady for most of the period, only bumping up slightly around 0600 UTC. Temperatures only rose slightly from yesterday's high, but the Bt/Bz chart had a number of collisions which partially discombobulated the Phi Angle. Right now, Bt/Bz is showing a very wide gap after its latest collision at 0430 UTC. The expected/predicted geomagnetic storms from the twin CMEs earlier in the week never materialized, with the KP-Index only bumping up to KP-2 twice in the past 15 readings (each reading is three hours apart). The Magnetometer's sine wave is a little jagged but mostly nominal, although it did dip down to 40 Nt for the third time this week. Proton Flux is nominal, Electron Flux is still going over the alert threshold as it has for most of the week. The X-Ray Flux showed a single spike just crossing the Class C flare line, but the background radiation remains in the lower third of Class B. The video loops are showing a new coronal hole developing in the Southeast, quite a bit below and somewhat behind the new sunspot group mentioned in yesterday's report. The Class C flare appears to have come from the departing sunspot group in the Southwest, visible on 304Ã… and 131Ã…. That group is now barely visible on the Magnetogram, but the new one is now at Beta-Delta complexity and growing. Should cross central heliographic longitude in the next 36 hours.

Ghost Polaritons: New Type of Infrared Polaritons Discovered at the Surface of Bulk Crystals

An international team has reported in Nature the first observation of ghost polaritons, which are a new form of surface waves carrying nanoscale light strongly coupled with material oscillations and featuring highly collimated propagation properties. The research team observed these phenomena over a common material – calcite – and showed how ghost polaritons can facilitate a superior control of infrared nano-light for sensing, signal processing, energy harvesting and other technologies.

In recent years, nanophotonics at infrared and terahertz frequencies has become important for highly sensitive, ultracompact and low-loss technologies for bio-molecular and chemical diagnosis, sensors, communications and other applications. Nanomaterial platforms that can facilitate enhanced light-matter interactions at these frequencies have become essential for these technologies. Recent work has been using low-dimensional van der Waals materials, such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and alpha-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3, Nature 2018), because of their highly exotic response to confined light at the nanoscale. However, these emerging nanomaterials require demanding nanofabrication techniques, hindering large-scale nanophotonic technologies.

Writing in Nature on 18th August 2021, a highly collaborative international team led by scientists at the City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center at the Graduate Center, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), National University of Singapore (NUS) and National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) has reported that calcite —a well-known bulk crystal commonly used in other technologies—can naturally support ghost polaritons.

The team explored light interactions with calcite and found unexpected infrared phonon polariton responses. They demonstrated that calcite, which can be easily polished, can support ghost polariton surface waves that feature complex, out-of-plane momentum totally different from any observed surface polariton to date.

“Polaritonics is the science and technology of exploiting strong interactions of light with matter, and it has revolutionized optical sciences in the past few years,” said Andrea Alù, Einstein Professor of Physics at the Graduate Center and Founding Director of the Photonics Initiative at the Advanced Science Research Center at the CUNY Graduate Center. “Our discovery is the latest example of the exciting science and surprising physics that can emerge from exploring polaritons in conventional materials like calcite.”

“We used scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) to probe these ghost polaritons,” said first author Weiliang Ma, a Ph.D. candidate at HUST. “Excitingly, we have shown ray-like nano-light propagation for up to 20 micrometers, a record long distance for polariton waves at room temperature.”

We have been thrilled to find a new solution of Maxwell’s equations featuring complex, out-of-plane momentum. And even more excitingly, we have been able to observe it in a very common crystal.” says Guangwei Hu, co-first author, NUS postdoctoral fellow and long-term visitor at CUNY.

“This type of polaritons can be tuned through their optical axis, introducing a new way of manipulation of polaritons, said Cheng-Wei Qiu, Dean’s Chair professor at NUS. “We believe our findings will stimulate exploration of various optical crystals for nanoscale light manipulation.”

First, the good news. Looks like the NOAA prediction of a geomagnetic storm overnight didn't materialize. KP-Index readings stayed pretty low, with a KP-0 and KP-1 instead of the KP-5 and KP-6 they forecast. Now, it might sneak in there later today, but at this point I'd be surprised if it did.

Now, the other good news. A pretty quiet day on ol'Sol during the period. Solar Wind speeds stayed low all through yesterday and this morning, riding the 320-340 KPS range until around 0800 UTC when it actually dropped below 310 KPS. Particle Density was amazingly stable, but we did see a bit of a drop in Temperature around 0830-0900 UTC to 4900°K. There were a couple of Bt/Bz polarity collisions at 1100 UTC and again just before 0800 UTC, which scrambled and shifted the Phi Angle from 350° to 150°. The Magnetometer is back to its nominal sine wave pattern, and the Proton Flux is steady as a rock, but we're still seeing the Electron Flux cresting over the alert threshold, although not as high or as long as a couple days ago. The X-Ray Flux chart did show a second low Class C flare around 1300 UTC, but it then dropped to the lower-to-mid Class B levels for the background radiation, with a few bumps and spikes in the mix. The morning Class C flare from yesterday was a pop from the new sunspot group in the Northeast (it didn't have time to make it the loop before the report) and the later one showed up on the departing sunspot group in the Southwest, throwing a very small bit of ejecta out ahead of our orbit. And it appears we have a new sunspot group building up. Noticed it on the Solar Visible Light loop, and then confirmed it on the Magnetogram. It's in the Southeast midlatitudes at least a day or so behind the coronal hole system (which is just passing the midpoint now). It does have at least Beta complexity and it's growing fast, so keep an eye on this one.
