Scientists have solved the mystery of Jupiter's polygon storms, which were first spotted by NASA's Juno space probe in 2019.

At the gas giant's south pole, hidden from view from Earth, is a herd of storms arranged in a perfect geometric pattern.

This is unlike anything else humanity has observed in the universe. The most comparable gas giant we know of, Saturn, has single massive storms at each of its poles - not a collection of them arranged in such a mathematical formation.

But a research team at the California Institute of Technology, working in the Andy Ingersoll laboratory, has now figured out why the storms arrange themselves in this pattern.

The answer - published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences - was inspired by a mathematical proof developed long before the space age - and almost 150 years ago by the British mathematical physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin.

Working alongside American physicist Alfred Mayer, he observed in 1878 that when circular magnets were floated in a pool of water, they would spontaneously arrange themselves into geometric shapes.

"Back in the 19th century, people were thinking about how spinning pieces of fluid would arrange themselves into polygons," Professor Ingersoll said.

"Although there were lots of laboratory studies of these fluid polygons, no one had thought of applying that to a planetary surface."

This is what the scientists at Ingersoll's laboratory did, building a computer model of what might be happening on Jupiter and running the simulations to see if their model held any value.

The storms are very similar to those on Earth, which form close to the equator and drift towards the poles - but on Earth the hurricanes and typhoons tend to dissipate when they get too far away from the equator.

However, because Jupiter's storms do not experience any friction from the land or the oceans, they keep on going until they reach the poles.

In the early trial runs of the simulations, the team found that the cyclones tended "to merge at the pole due to the rotation of the planet" said Dr Cheng Li, lead author of the study and a researcher at UC Berkeley.

But they found that the stable geometric arrangement could occur when the storms were each surrounded by a ring of winds turning in the opposite direction to the storms themselves, called an anticyclonic ring.

The made the storms repel each other rather than merge.

This phenomenon could help researchers understand how Earth's weather behaves - but also solves a particularly fascinating and modern mystery.

"Other planets provide a much wider range of behaviours than what you see on Earth, so you study the weather on other planets in order to stress-test your theories," Professor Ingersoll said.

The solar winds were a bit of a roller coaster, but not a King's Island one - more like a kiddy carney coaster. Speeds dipped down from their high of 580 KPS down to about 500 KPS before midnight UTC, then up again to 560 KPS before dropping down to its current 490-500 KPS level. Particle density dropped slightly after midnight as well, and the temp got a bit squiggly gut seems to have stabilized slightly lower.  We've seen three KP-5 readings on the Index in the past 36 hours, as well as five KP-4s, one of which just happened after midnight, so we're still in a low-intensity solar storm. The latest reading just before this posting dropped that one down to KP-2. The Electron Flux readings are cresting over the threshold again, but not by much. The X-Ray Flux is still in the higher Class A range, but I'm not seeing any new spikes like yesterday. We'll be receiving a solar song from that BACH (Big-A$$ed Coronal Hole) in the North as it passes the midpoint. However, there was also an equatorial hole that developed and passed the midpoint as well, so that might add a bit of oomph (yes, as mentioned in previous postings, that IS a scientific term) to the stream. As to the bright spot, there's still a lot of underlying magnetic complexity down there, but there still remains signs of decay. Didn't see any flares or expulsions on the various video wavelengths. By the bye, if you're a follower of Ben Davidson's S0 group, you already know the correlation between solar activity and earthquakes. Well, that correlation seems to be on track as we saw an uptick in temblors, with a Mag 6.2 (the first in over a week) between Africa and Antarctica, a Mag 5.3 near Karyes Greece, a Mag 5.2 off Nilolski Alaska followed by a Mag 5.6 less than 30 minutes later, and another Mag 5.2 near Shinshiro Japan.

Boeing assembles team to bid for next-gen missile defense interceptor

WASHINGTON ― Boeing has assembled a team with General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems and Aerojet Rocketdyne to bid to build the Missile Defense Agency’s Next Generation Interceptor (NGI).

The agency decided last year to scrap its plans to redesign the kill vehicle of its current Ground-Based Interceptors (GBI) that is part of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system designed to defend the homeland against possible intercontinental ballistic missiles from North Korea and Iran.

The MDA is holding a competition instead to design a brand new interceptor for the GMD system.

The company has an extensive history with the GMD system in place at Fort Greely, Alaska, and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, having held the development and sustainment contract for years. That contract is set to expire in 2023 and MDA is weighing options to break up that contract to foster competition that promotes increased capability.

“The Boeing-led team will deliver critical technology to enhance our homeland missile defense,” Norm Tew, Boeing Missile and Weapon Systems vice president, said in a Sept. 24 statement. “Combined, we bring decades of expertise in proven missile and weapon systems.”

An NGI “requires a new way of thinking supported by a proven ability to deliver pioneering solutions,” Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS, said in a separate company statement issued Sept. 24. “We are excited to partner with Boeing to deliver the disruptive technologies needed to help MDA rapidly deploy an interceptor system that bolsters the nation’s missile defense network and ensures that the U.S., our allies, and partner nations maintain military overmatch against ever evolving threats from adversaries.”

Aerojet Rocketdyne will supply the propulsion system. “As the country’s premier hit-to-kill propulsion provider, we’re able to deliver low-cost, high-performance systems by leveraging our skilled workforce and strategic investments in innovative technology and materials,” Eileen Drake, Aerojet Rocketdyne CEO, said in the Boeing statement.

Boeing reports the team submitted its NGI offering to MDA on Aug. 12.

Also according to the statement, Northrop Grumman will serve as a “component supplier” on the Boeing team.

Northrop is also teaming up separately with Raytheon to compete against the Boeing team and Lockheed Martin. Raytheon was the developer of the now-canceled RKV.

MDA aims to downselect to two companies later this year, who will then compete for the right to build the interceptor.

Proposals were due July 31, but MDA noted in its request for proposals that there may be some give in that schedule due to the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The agency requested $664.1 million in fiscal year 2021 for the NGI program, as part of a $4.9 billion five-year budget plan.

Starting in 2021, SpaceX can reuse boosters for Space Force launches

The U.S. Space Force will save $53 million in launch expenses due to a contract modification with SpaceX, which will allow the company to reuse Falcon 9 first-stage boosters for future launches.

“SMC’s commitment to innovative partnerships and working with the commercial sector while maintaining our mission assurance posture and mission-success record cannot be understated,” said Walt Lauderdale, the Space and Missile Systems Center’s Falcon Systems and Operations Division chief and frequent mission director. “I am proud of our partnership with SpaceX that allowed us to successfully negotiate contract modifications for the upcoming GPS III missions that will save taxpayers $52.7 million while maintaining our unprecedented record of success.”

Under the contract modification, the reused boosters will first be utilized to launch GPS III space vehicle five and six, with the first of those launches to take place in 2021.

“SpaceX is proud to leverage Falcon 9′s flight-proven benefits and capabilities for national security space launch missions,” said Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer, in a statement. “We appreciate the effort that the U.S. Space Force invested into the evaluation and are pleased that they see the benefits of the technology. Our extensive experience with reuse has allowed SpaceX to continually upgrade the fleet and save significant precious tax dollars on these launches.”

SpaceX first collaborated with the Space and Missile Systems Center to recover a booster from the third GPS III launch on June 30, 2020, and plans to recover a booster from the upcoming GPS III launch on Sept. 29. That launch will take place from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

Of course, the company has been recovering and reusing its boosters for commercial launches for some time now. According to SpaceX, they have recovered booster from 53 launches, reusing them in another 38 launches.

“The United States' launch industry is the envy of the world,” said Lt. Gen. John F. Thompson, commander of the U.S. Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center. “Industry’s innovation has been key to SMC’s success over our 60+ year existence. I am thrilled to welcome SpaceX’s innovative reuse into the National Security Space Launch program!”

NASA's new $23 million space toilet is ready for launch

NASA is launching a new space toilet to the International Space Station next week for astronauts to test out before it’s used on future missions to the moon or Mars.

The $23 million toilet system, known as the Universal Waste Management System (UWMS), is 65% smaller and 40% lighter than the toilet currently in use on the space station, and can support larger crews. The toilet will launch to the space station aboard a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo capsule on Sept. 29, as part of a routine resupply mission.

Once on the space station, astronauts will test how the new toilet performs in the microgravity environment on the station. The system will be installed adjacent to the current toilet in Node 3 of the space station, NASA Advanced Exploration Systems Logistics Reduction project manager Melissa McKinley said during a news conference Thursday (Sept. 24).

Expedition 63 astronauts Chris Cassidy and Ivan Vagner have started preparing for the space toilet's delivery. The crew will use the orbiting lab's Canadarm2 robotic arm to capture the Cygnus spacecraft, according to a statement from the space agency.

"The toilet was designed for exploration and it builds on previous spaceflight toilet design," McKinley said during the press conference. "The big key to the exploration piece of the design is looking to optimize mass volume and power usage, which are all very important components of a spacecraft design."

The space toilet's advanced design includes a urine funnel and seat that is created to be more accommodating for female crew members. It also features a 3D-printed titanium dual fan separator, which was developed by Collins Aerospace and creates a strong airflow that, in lieu of gravity, helps to pull the astronauts’ urine and waste into the toilet.

The titanium design also improves upon the existing pretreat system used to collect and treat astronauts' urine before it is processed and recycled for reclaimed water.

The UWMS measures roughly 28 inches (71 centimeters) tall, which is comparable to the compact toilets used on campers, McKinley said during the conference. The toilet also has an automatic starting system, rather than an on and off switch like current toilet models on the space station.

The new system will be used routinely by the crew on the space station and tested over the next three years to make sure everything works as planned. Prior to launch, the system was tested in environments designed to simulate that of the space station, NASA officials have said.

Solar winds have stayed elevated since yesterday, riding the 500 KPS line (with peaks and valleys 50 KPS either side of that line). The density stayed on a rock solid path all day and night, and the temperature had a few minor variations but nothing of serious import. We're still in a solar storm, though, with two KP-5 (red) readings yesterday and this morning, bracketing a couple of KP-4s (yellow) readings. The X-Ray Flux, however, got some definite spikes into the mid-B Class range, and one just after midnight UTC that touched the C Class range before dipping back down to mid-A Class. The Electron Flux crested well above the threshold as well. The solar videos didn't show any obvious/major ejections, but that Northern coronal hole is just getting to the midpoint now (and it's a big'un!), while the bright spot is maybe 24-36 hours from that position. The good news is the magnetogram is definitely showing more decay in the magnetic complexity, but caution should still be applied here. There's also a lot of incoming glow from the lim, so this will definitely continue. Only one temblor yesterday, a Mag 5.2 in Turkmenistan, and a handful of blot echoes ranging from Mag 4.6-5.1.

As the agency moves forward with its Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface by 2024, NASA is also working on its relationship with the newly-minted Space Force, which was formed Dec. 2019. Today (Sept. 22), NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. John "Jay" Raymond announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between NASA and the U.S. Space Force. 

This agreement officially joins the two entities in collaboration with regard to "human spaceflight, U.S. space policy, space transportation, standards and best practices for safe operations in space, scientific research and planetary defense," NASA said in a statement.

NASA and the Space Force have penned this MOU to "affirm a strong interest in continuing their longstanding partnership for mutually beneficial collaborative activities in furtherance of space exploration, scientific discovery, and security," the MOU reads.

While NASA is focused on exploration, science and technology, the Space Force is a military operation. But while the two have very different missions and overall goals, "we share the same domain and we're operating in the same environment. So there's a lot of synergies, a lot of overlap," Bridenstine said today during a Mitchell Institute virtual event.

"NASA and the military share a long history dating back to the late 1950s; there is power in our partnership," Raymond said in the same statement. "A secure, stable, and accessible space domain underpins our nation’s security, prosperity and scientific achievement. Space Force looks forward to future collaboration, as NASA pushes farther into the universe for the benefit of all."

"In the case of NASA, it's way more than just sharing data ... we sit on the floor together, we do the analytical work together, it's a partnership that is really, really tight," Raymond added during the event today.

While NASA doesn't dabble in military power and defense, the agency, especially now with this collaboration, is an integral piece of National power, which comprises diplomatic, informational, military and economic powers, in the U.S., Bridenstine explained.

"We are an instrument of national power," Bridenstine added. "It is soft power, it is diplomatic power, information power, economic power," he said about NASA's role in working with other nations in space through ongoing programs like the International Space Station, the steps the agency has taken in commercializing space and more.

"This is really a tool of diplomacy for the nation," he said about the agency, "but we can't do any of those things if space is not secure. And that's why it was important to create the Space Force, that's why it's important for NASA to partner with the Space Force."

In "securing" space, NASA aims to, with the support of the U.S. Space Force, "have their international collaborators "agree to basic norms of behavior," which will ultimately be "what will preserve space for humanity," Bridenstine said.

With this MOU, the agency and the military branch aim to adhere to the Outer Space Treaty but take it even further, by collaboratively creating these "norms" so that, as companies and space agencies work to launch their own missions to space, they take into account "what are are the norms of behavior that all nations need to abide by in order for us to be able to sustain space for a long time," Bridenstine said.

Solar winds have remained elevated from yesterday, still staying in the 450-500 KPS range (which is down from yesterday's peak), current speed up a bit to 520 KPS. Density remained stable, and the temperature has stayed pretty much the same (up). The KP Index did calm down a bit after yesterday's KP-5 peak, but it did come back up to KP-4 (minor solar storm) levels after midnight. After a few days of calm, the Electron Flux popped back up above the threshold for a while yesterday, and we're seeing the X-Ray Flux staying pretty steady in the high Class A flare range. The large coronal hole in the North still moves apace toward the center, the major bright spot right on its heels. No big flares (yet) from it, but the magnetogram this morning seems to suggest there's a lot more going on underneath than 36-48 hours ago. Eyes open, folks. The lithosphere was calm(ish) again, with only four temblors of note: a Mag 5.3 off Mexico in the Gulf of California, a Mag 5.3 in the Scotia Sea, a Mag 5.4 around 70 miles SE of Perryville, Alaska, and a late-breaking Mag 5.3 in India, not too far from the Pakistan border.

DELFT – A Dutch start-up has created a biodegradable “living coffin” made of a fungus, instead of wood, which it says can convert a decomposing human body into key nutrients for plants.

The company, Loop, says its casket is made of mycelium, the underground root structure of mushrooms and filled with a bed of moss to stimulate decomposition.

“Mycelium is nature’s biggest recycler,” Bob Hendrikx, the creator of the living coffin told Reuters.

“It’s continuously looking for food and transforming it into plant nutrition.”

Mycelium also devours toxins and turns them into nutrients.

“It’s used in Chernobyl to clean up the soil there from the nuclear disaster”, Hendrikx said.

“And the same thing happens in our burial places because the soil is super polluted there and mycelium really likes metals, oils and microplastics.”

The coffin is grown like a plant within the space of a week at the company’s lab at the Technical University of Delft by mixing mycelium with wood chips in the mold of a coffin.

After the mycelium has grown through the wood chips, the coffin is dried and has enough strength to carry a weight of up to 200 kilograms (440 lb).

Once buried, interaction with ground water will dissolve the coffin within 30 to 45 days. Decomposition of the body is estimated to take only 2 to 3 years, instead of the 10 to 20 years it takes with traditional coffins.

Loop has so far grown and sold 10 living coffins, Hendrikx said, for 1,500 euros ($1,761) a piece.

“When the living coffin is in the ground you can even water it, add seeds and you can decide what tree you want to become.”

WASHINGTON — Amidst expectations that the U.S. will sell F-35 joint strike fighters to the United Arab Emirates, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper on Tuesday reaffirmed his commitment to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge.

“The defense relationship between the United States and Israel has never been stronger. We intend to keep it that way,” Esper said in pooled comments ahead of a meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz.

“I do want to say upfront for everyone that a cornerstone of our defense relationship is preserving Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region,” Esper added. “The United States is committed to that and the Department of Defense is committed to that imperative. We will continue to support the longstanding U.S. policy to maintain Israel’s security.”

Israel’s QME is a congressionally mandated rule that, in essence, says Israel needs to maintain a military technology edge over its neighbors. The rationale for the language is that Israel, as a small nation surrounded by hostile states, needs an extra edge from its U.S. partner to survive. In essence, this has meant certain high-end weapons will not be allowed to be sold to states in the region, most notably Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

That seems to have changed for the Emirates, however, in the wake of a new agreement normalizing relations between the UAE and Israel. Immediately reports surfaced that F-35 sales to the UAE are forthcoming, with President Donald Trump saying earlier this month that “I would have no problem in selling them the F-35, I would have absolutely no problem.”

The UAE has eyed the possibility of buying the F-35, America’s newest fighter jet, for years. While potential sales of the jet to the UAE or Saudi Arabia were largely seen as a long-shot because of objections from Israel, there was some hope in the UAE that strong support for increasing arms sales abroad would open the doors.

In 2017, regional sources told Defense News the UAE was eyeing a buy of 24 F-35s; it is unclear if that number is still in play now. The UAE is looking to replace its 67-aircraft Mirage 2000 fleet.

Notably, Israeli publication Calcalist reported last week that there is a strong chance that the wings for the UAE’s F-35 fleet could be produced by Israel Aerospace Industries.

For his part, Gantz used his comments to praise the military relationship with the U.S., saying “we have no other United States, nor do you have any other Israel. And we will make sure together to keep those bonds active and close to one another.”

“It has to do with QME but it also has to do with a lot of cooperation that we have. We always say that is in our more interest to share with you anything we can possibly share. And we will continue those relations into the future,” he added.
