The Motorola Razr offers a new spin on the classic 2004 flip phone. Motorola
Flipping back to the past.
Motorola has hopped aboard the nostalgia train by re-releasing the Motorola Razr — as a foldable smartphone. The phone firm announced the device with a “You’re gonna flip” video warning Wednesday on Twitter, racking up more than 800,000 views and likes.
The aim of the phone appears to be evoking nostalgia while keeping up with joneses. As a result, the hipsterized device features all the capabilities of a normal iPhone, but with the retro “flip” design of the old-school Razr, CNN reports.
More specifically, it will maintain the sleek design of its 2004 predecessor while swapping out the T9 keypad and small LCD with a 6.2-inch foldable plastic OLED panel and Android 9 Pie.
The revamped flip-phone will run customers $1,499 at full price and will officially debut in January. US customers will be able to buy it exclusively through Verizon — with pre-orders starting Dec. 26 — while it will be available unlocked in Canada, reports CNN.
Motorola’s musical Twitter teaser hypes “they don’t make ’em like me no more” on a loop — and it appears at least part of the Twitterverse is into it.
“I’m tired of big phones so this will be perfect!!!” tweeted one flipping fan.
However, others were less enthused. “You’ve got to be kidding me!!! Exclusive to Verizon only?!? tf!” posted a detractor.
Former child actor and “Malcolm in the Middle” star Frankie Muniz, however, fell squarely in the pro-Razr camp: “Are you serious?? Super want!!.”
