Report: Israel in negotiations to acquire V-22 Osprey from the US
By Dan Arkin, Israel Defense, 10/03/20
The government of Israel is restarting its talks with the American administration on the acquisition of the V-22 Osprey hybrid helicopter-airplane. Israel is interested in acquiring 12 of the aircraft, manufactured by Bell Boeing, according to a report by the Defense Blog website.
The site points out that the deal is also supposed to include motors made by Rolls Royce, AN/AAQ-27 infrared radar systems and related equipment. The American administration expressed willingness to sell Israel these planes in 2012, and two years later the State Department approved the sale of six V-22 Block C airplanes worth $1.13 billion.
Why America's V-22 Osprey Just Keeps Getting Better - Able to Fly Across the Pacific Ocean
The V-22 Osprey takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter and flies horizontally like an airplane. It can reach high speed (double that of transport helicopters) and high altitude, and therefore is suitable for flying forces on special operations.
If a deal is reached, Israel will be the second country – after Japan – to acquire V-22 aircraft. The Japanese military has so far bought five of them at a cost of $332 million.
