SPACE - S0 - 20210510 - Sun Erupts at Earth, Comet, Currents, No-Field Physics
Good Morning, 0bservers!
Solar wind speeds increased throughout Sunday from a low of 300 KPS to a high of 345 KPS, then jumped up to about 365 KPS around 0400 UTC. It has calmed back down a bit into the 330-340 KPS range since then. This increase was preceded by a small bump in the Particle Density. Temperatures followed the wind speed shift, and there was some Phi Angle instability starting around midnight before a solid shift around 0400 UTC. The KP-Index did go up a bit (just to KP-2, still well within the green zone) around midnight, when the Particle Density moved up. Magnetometer readings were elevated on the upper end of the sine wave, getting close to the 140 nT level, but the lower end is still well within the safe zone. Nominal readings on both Proton Flux and Electron Flux charts. X-Ray Flux charts showed another mid-C Class flare Sunday afternoon around 1300 UTC, but it sloped down by midnight to background radiation levels just near the top of Class A. With all the activity from the sunspot group that gave us the Class M flare on Friday, we're going to REALLY have to be diligent in monitoring its activity. That flare included a pretty hefty CME, and it will catch Earth and just a bit ahead of our orbit as well. The ENLIL spiral showed it impacting in a couple of days.
