SPACE - S0 - 20210512 - CME Impacts Earth, Two Special Reports
Good Morning, 0bservers!
Had a rather impressive leap in solar wind speeds just before 0600 UTC, going from about 310 KPS to 450 KPS in a matter of a few minutes, then down to 400KSP for a short time and now in the 460-480 KPS range. Particle Density rose at the same time instead of preceding it, so this is almost certainly the CME from the other day. Temperatures also jumped at the same time, and the Phi Angle went a bit do and lally (yes, that is a scientific term) as well. That punched the KP-Index, which was at KP-1 levels most of yesterday (with couple KP-0s thrown in just before midnight UTC) straight up to KP-4 (minor geomagnetic storm). Expect that to remain high(er) today for some time as the CME passes. The Magnetometer's pretty nominal, as well as the Proton Flux and Electron Flux. We did get a sharp Class C flare between 0900-1000 UTC, but it was in the lower end of the range. You can just see the flash in the last few seconds of the video loops at 304Å, from the Northern sunspot group. The new bright spot in the South has just crossed the Eastern lim, and it's only barely visible on the Magnetogram. That coronal hole in the South should be crossing the midpoint in the next 36-48 hours.
