SPACE - S0 - 20201210 - CME Impact, Solar Winds, Climate Yikes
Good Morning, 0bservers!
Solar wind speeds slowly rose throughout yesterday from a low of around 360 KPS to around 470 KPS by midnight UTC. And then, around 0200 we saw a major jump to about 600 KPS before backing down over the next few hours to just under 500 KPS. Temperature rise was more steady through the day, but then got a similar (yet smaller) kick in the backside up the charts. Same goes for the Particle Density, but its rise followed the uptick in wind speed, it didn't precede it. The Phi Angle didn't show any destabilization during that timeframe, however. Proton Flux and Electron Flux remained nominal, but the Magnetometer readings were a bit wider between the peaks and valleys, coming very close to the low-end of the scale at 40 nanoTeslas while peaking at 120. The KP-Index stayed mostly in the green yesterday, but we did get a KP-4 (minor geomagnetic storm) just after midnight. It's dropped down since then to KP-3, then KP-1, but the SWPC does show a G-3 storm forecast for the next 24 hours, so we'll see what happens there in tomorrow's report. Thankfully, the X-Ray Flux remains with a baseline in the upper Class A flare region, with a spike into lower Class B around 0100 UTC, and then another of the same strength (but shorter duration) around 1030 UTC.
