The Greek Army is about to procure its first M1117 Guardian armored vehicles, a report by the Global Defense Corp website says. Over the summer, the US Congress approved the sale of 1,200 used armored vehicles said to be in excellent condition for about 70,000 euros each although the real value is estimated to be at least 500,000 euros each. The abovementioned price includes the turrets but not the armament so the Greek Army needs to acquire and install the machine guns and the grenade launchers, the report said.

The M1117 Guardian, a 4x4 vehicle developed in the late 1990s, has armor that reportedly can not only withstand explosions of 5kg mines but also explosions of 155mm artillery shells at a distance of 15 meters. The M-1117 weighs 13.4 tons and is 6 meters long, 2.6 meters wide and 2.6 meters high. The vehicle is powered by an 8.3-liter Cummins diesel engine that produces 260 horsepower and has a torque said to be easy to perceive. Its maximum speed reaches about 100 kilometers per hour, and the version that the Greek Army will reportedly receive could carry five people. The vehicle offers the crew 360-degree vision, has an air conditioning system and its armor is tilted to fire anti-tank rockets, according to the report.
